Két évvel, a 2018-as vb-ig meghosszabbította a szerződését Joachim Löw, a világbajnok német labdarúgó-válogatott szövetségi kapitánya.

Ezt Wolfgang Niersbach, a német sportági szövetség elnöke pénteken sajtótájékoztató keretében jelentette be, hozzátéve, hogy Thomas Schneider másodedző és Andreas Köpke kapusedző ugyancsak 2018-ig marad.
