A Szuperligát hat angol - Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Manchester City -, három olasz - Juventus, AC Milan, Internazionale - és három spanyol sztárklub - Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Atlético Madrid - hozta létre, elsőszámú vezetője pedig Florentino Perez, a Real Madrid elnöke lett.
