He obtained a teaching degree in 1968 at the Faculty of Arts of Kossuth Lajos University Debrecen where he has been working since. He became head of department and university professor of the Modern Hungarian Literary History Department in 1992. Between 1993 and 1995 he was deputy rector of education, and director of the institute between 1995-2003. He has been a visiting professor at the universities of Vienna and Helsinki. His research area is the history of Twentieth century Hungarian literature, specialising in Hungarian lyric poetry, popular literature and Hungarian literature beyond the frontiers. He obtained a postgraduate award in Czechoslovakia in 1978 with his thesis on Hungarian literature. He became a doctor of the Academy with his dissertation on the poetry of László Nagy (1991). He obtained the Kossuth award in 2000. He was elected as a corresponding member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 2001.
