Tibor Palánkai was born on March 1 1938 in Jakabszállás. He has been working at the Budapest University of Economics (formerly named Karl Marx University) since July 1960. After a number of various teaching positions he was appointed university professor in 1982. Between 1977 and 1983 he was scientific deputy rector of the university and between 1983 and 1995 headed the World Economy Department. Between July 1997 and February 2000 he was the rector of the university. Currently he is the director of the European Studies and Educational Centre of Budapest University of Economic Sciences and Public Administration (BEÁK). From the 1990's he has concentrated his research work on European integration, East-European transformation, and lately Hungary's EU accession. His priority research field is economic union, economic policy coordination and the issues of integration measurement.
