Since 1989 Sándor Pongor has been the head of the Protein Research and Bioinformatics Group of the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology in Trieste. He is the founder of the group which has has been active, among others, in teaching bioinformatics since 1991. Since 2001 he has been the head of the Bioinformatics Group of the Biological Research Center in Szeged and teaches at the Department of Genetics and Molecular Biology of the University of Szeged. In 1996-1997 he was the president of the European Society of Bioinformatics and later on he served as a member of the executive board. In 1985-1989 he was responsible for organizing the scientific program of the Agricultural Biotechnology Center of Gödöllő. In 1981-1985 he worked in the US, at Rockefeller University and Cornell University. In 2002 he was awarded a Szent-Györgyi Albert fellowship. He works on protein databases, on protein structure, protein chemistry and molecular modelling problems.
