Péter Erdő was born in 1952. He was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest in 1975 and then bishop in 2000. On 11 January 2003 he took up office as the archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest and Primate of Hungary. His professional field in theology is canonical law. Before his appointment as bishop he was the rector of the Pázmány Péter Catholic University, and president of the Canonical Law Post-Graduate Institution of the university. He is the author of 200 studies and 16 books in the field of canonical law and medieval canonical law. He is editor-in-chief of several international and domestic journals and book series. He is a visiting professor and doctor honoris causa of a number of universities abroad, counsellor of the three central authorities of the Apostolic Holy See and a member of the presidency of the Hungarian Rectors' Conference. As the representative of the Catholic Church, he participated in the development of several state laws on the Church and the freedom of religion. As a member of the Church Delegation he took part in the preparation of several agreements between Hungary and the Holy See.
