He obtained a mining engineering degree in 1962 and in 1968, a degree in opencast mining from Miskolc University of Heavy Industry and Technology. Since 1962 he has been working at the Mining and Geotechnical Department (Earlier Mining Dept.), he has been university professor since 1977 and head of department since 1984. His field of teaching and research is the study and economic evaluation of exploitable mineral raw materials, defining the optimal parameters of mining and energetics systems, the development of mining technologies and defence methods against natural and mining hazards. He is head of the Sámuel Mikoviny Graduate School for Earth Sciences and president of the Doctors' Council of the Miskolc University. He is an active participant in domestic and international professional-scientific life. He is the author of more than 200 scientific bulletins, has given 130 lectures at domestic and international conferences and worked on the study of 300 research subjects. From 1993 he has been a full member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA), an honorary member of three foreign academies and an honorary Doctor of six foreign universities. He has received several important awards (Award of the Academy, Lóránd Eötvös Award, State Award, Order of Merit of the Hungarian Republic, Commander Cross).
