Mr. Rónyai was born in Szekszárd in 1955. He spent his childhood in the village of Gerjen in Tolna County. In 1973, he graduated from Saint Stephen Grammar School in Kalocsa. He obtained his degree in mathematics at ELTE in 1979. He has worked in the Research Institute of Computer Technology and Automation of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences since 1979; at present, he is the head of the Research Laboratory of Computer Science. He has been a lecturer at the Technical University of Budapest since 1989, and the head of the Algebra Department since 2001. He was made a corresponding member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 2001. His research mainly concerns issues on the boundary of algebra and computer science. He spent two years in the United States as a guest professor at the University of Oregon and the University of Chicago.
