Born in 1949, Zoltán Janka completed his secondary school studies at the Lehel Vezér Grammar School in Jászberény. He graduated in 1974 from the Medical University of Szeged with a degree in Medicine. He went on to gain postgraduate qualifications in Neurology and Psychiatry. He was an academic candidate from 1985, and became an honorary lecturer in 1996. This year, he was awarded a Doctorate by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Between 1980 and 1982, he carried out research at the University of Perth in Australia, and he also took part in study visits to Sweden in 1987 and to England in 1991. His research focusses on the biological underpinnings of psychiatric disorders and treatments based on molecular and pharmacodynamic investigation. His scientific and educational achievements have earned him several prizes and scholarships. Students - on both his English and Hungarian courses - have voted him "best teacher" on several occasions. Awarded both the Medicina Prize and the Nyírő Gyula Prize for his scientific publications, Zoltán Janka was a recipient of the Széchenyi Scholarship for Professors between 2000 and 2003.
