He received his MSc in 1972 in the University of Horticultural Sciences.He is a full member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and research professor of the Agricultural Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Martonvásár. His major research interest is the genomic organisation of viruses, the investigation of the function of viral genes and genetic engineering of plants. He worked many years in the US, France and Switzerland. As an internationally acknowledged expert of the regulation of genetic engineering, he was involved in formulating the regulations of the UNEP and in wording of the Cartagena-protocol.
